16th-Dec-2007 08:00 am - I am Legend
SISTERS
So my Saturday was a bust, despite my request of  [info]autumnthingto setup JEBJ's appointment earlier in the day she stuck with noon guns and of course we arrived late...

Later in the day I was informed that she was planning to rattle around the house all day and that in the evening I was to be expected to attend to JEBL whilst she was packing - yeah right! What that actually meant was, Autumnthing time to play on the internet. At 8pm he went down ok, the merry little soul, having made din dins for him and autumnthing for which there was nary a please or a thank you. Undoubtedly it was disgusting fare as I have been told in the past that I am a craptabulous cook.

I went out to I am Legend, it is not everyone's cup of tea and certainly i didnt really have any clear expectations of what to expect. The story was conceptually interesting,  hardly a suprise, it is a rehash,  I Am Legend is a 1954 science fiction novel by Richard Matheson about the last man alive on the planet Earth.  This version modifies the premise slightly and doesnt explicitly make the Night Stalkers vampires, just meat eaters!

The special effects with CGI and probably models etc were very good, though the rendering of the lions made them look a little mangey. The mutants were ok, though the whole thing seemed a little far fetched until I realized that the Koreans have just genetically modified some cats to phosphoresce. All this leads one to believe that they may well indeed come up with some sort of neutralizer of things like cancer. The movie had an interesting quotable quote. Think of cancer as a bad person driving a really fast car... next roadside stop...genetic armageddon.

Hotsprings
The sun looks like it might come up today, it is start to try and peep through the clouds.

The traffic was fairly light today, not entirely sure why, one always tries to dodge getting caught behind a bus and particularly a school bus, the buses don't have proper bus stops as cuttings into the sidewalk - all rather frustrating.

Yesterday I took an alternative route home, 140th instead of 148th and I now remember why I don't take that route, the road narrows at 8th ave and there are invariable some asses who cut in, I hate line jumpers.

Jasper was on top form when I got home, in fact so, on form that I took a video of him feeding himself!

I was a little hesitant about giving him some of the things I gave him to eat, we ate some Duck Tureen, the usual smidge of pickled herring and his favorite, of the moment, pasta (fusilli) with parmesan cheese.

The night was rounded out with my Beujolais favourite of the day!

1st-Dec-2007 09:02 pm - Is that snow?
Hotsprings
Indeed, it seems winter is 'actually' upon us, though last night was cold, when I awoke this morning, everything was dusted with a fine 1" of powder and though it looked like that was it for the day, as things developed eventually it started snowing with gusto this afternoon.  My plans to go to The Darjeeling Limited last night were gazumped by KKL who decided libations were in order and accordingly we downed a couple of the black stuff before parting company. I then went on to see Enchanted, a positively delightful little mindless Disney thingamybob which I thoroughly enjoyed and may make the exception of being prepared to go and see again!!

This morning I went to Greenlake and did a couple of rounds of the lake with a friend. Breakfast at the Bluwater Bistro ; a not half bad omellete though I have to say it lacked chives or capers or something.....not enough zing!

The walk was fun, I developed a couple of blisters but they will mend in no time i am sure, chin got a bit cold though so at this time of the year it is important to take a scarf too. Max was on top form, well behaved, didnt get too excited by the other doggies at all.

The drive back was a little tortuous, the snow was pelting pretty heavily and on the 520 visibility was a little obscured. I got home ok though, just in time for [info]autumnthingto get going on her art smack down and tryst. Young JEBJ was on top form, i was feeding him snow today and he was so thoroughly thrilled by the whole thing that it was delightful. I am just now trying to teach him that it is SNOW dear boy, not RAIN!

Curried/masala chicken thighs for dinner with pasta - was quite scrumptalicious rounded out with a delicious Rhone Red Parallele 45 2005
27th-Nov-2007 01:00 pm - Lunch?
Jolly Repin
Someone sent me the wheel of lunch, cute but not that clever - try it !

Todd and I took a meander down to the cafeteria this morning, he drug back a salad and i a yoghurt with strawberries. It was quite an invigorating walk - about a mile or so, good job it wasnt raining, but it was bloody cold! I should have worn gloves, that would have helped my hands but not my feet which have still not quite recovered.

He is a funny fellow, comes up with some of the most curious topics for discussion, today it was about guns. Some celebrity sportsman apparently attacked an intruder in his home in Miami with a machete and got shot. They say, never take a knife to a gun fight - he evidently never heard that pearl of wisdom.

Todd said he couldnt understand why people would want to outlaw guns, after all the genie is out of the bottle so to speak, there are so many in circulation how do you curtail their presence.  He revealed that he had bought one and then sold it, had bought it for self defense and recreation. Though I have fired guns and find them fascinating I am not sure i could convince myself that having one for self defense would be such a smart thing. i was always taught that having a gun made you a target for someone wanting that gun! England is a classic example of a place where having a weapon is largely impossible in the form of a handgun or semi automatic rifle yet they still exist and are used regularly in crimes.

We concluded that if you really are so anxious about your personal safety and in particular in the event of a home invasion, then the solution is to have a gun, sure, have a mobile phone with adequate coverage, have a good strong lockable door to your bedroom and have an alarm system with a claxon so that the entire neighborhood knows when you are under attack. If there's an intruder, why bother trying to confront them, they may take you out in the process of trying to escape getting caught - are chattles worth your life?
26th-Nov-2007 08:00 am - One Month
Revolution
Just a month left to go with this gig.

This week we have moved even further out, and whilst my commute is not entirely horrible, adding another ten minutes is not my idea of fun, we are almost as far out as the Redhook now, next move - Duvall!

Last night JEBJ and I were home alone again having father and son quality time and I cooked up some lovely Pork steaks with stire fried vegetables augmented with cashew nuts, he dove straight in, though he is a little lazy when it comes to the meat. Though it was soft he was still lazy about eating it.

Overnight he was disturbed, not sure what that was all about, I heard the dulcet tones of him moaning just after 4am, went through to him and rearranged his gear and he went back down, but not for long. Whilst I was going potty he literally went potty and his mother then went to attend to him and gave him teething gel or something, I am not sure. Needless to say, the disrupted sleep lost me some crash time and I made a late start of the day which was not entirely satisfactory. Anyhow, we shall see how it goes over the coming days, hopefully the tooth/teeth that were bothering him have now cut and he will be more his chipper self.

It was bitterly cold this morning, I know for sure that Winter is here, out at Willows the golf course is covered with a grey sheen and as I was taking the recycling out this morning I almost slipped on the driveway - not good! There was so much frost about that even the door lock on the car wouldnt unlock.

The new buildings are nice enough, well appointed, open cubicles and like 87 almost completely vacant - it wont last i know but then again I wont be around long enough to see it make a difference.

25th-Nov-2007 08:29 am - Food Rants
Jolly Repin
So the boy and I had courgettes, broccoli, mushrooms and lamb fillet last night, he seemed to enjoy it well enough, his hair was crazy from the perspiration of his sleep. The mushrooms were sauteed in chicken fat - yum! I did the food in the correct order this time and the last step was the gravy, cream, green peppercorns, some herbs, salt and red wine.  Since I used the the balance of that splendid Beaujolais in the cooking, I had to simply open another!

I looked at the baklava tray this morning and thought to myself, surely I didn't eat THAT many, amazing what will happen over a period of three or four days, or was it longer?

It is disappointing that they had to find some way to defile it by putting high fructose corn syrup in it, i mean it is supposed to be made from flour, butter, nuts and honey wtf did the corn syrup feature in that product list? All those other ingredients are cited as being in there anyway!

I also wonder at how they can honestly call this Kosher, i mean Kosher foods surely have their origins in many instances based on ethical and principled animal husbandry and agricultural practices. Corn syrup and it production is hardly responsible, and besides the current line of thinking is that along with hydrogenated vegetable oils, corn syrup is in everything and not good for you.

So, inspired by Sinbad's baklava (there's something in a name) I looked up kosher and "corn syrup" and here's what i found for passover.

"Under proper supervision, corn syrup can be kosher for Passover. We can permit some products made from an ingredient that itself would ordinarily be considered "chametz" or not kosher for Passover.

The general rule was to prohibit corn syrup when it was uncertain whether the preparation of the corn syrup was done with the appropriate supervision. Secondly, rabbis could prohibit corn syrup, which is a sweetener, as there are other kosher for Passover sweeteners, including potato syrup and sugar.

However, under the right circumstances, corn syrup can be kosher for Passover."

This is altogether a disappointing response, I mean I don't like it. In fact, since Rain Creek Baking has an email address I am going to write and complain that they have defiled a perfectly good product by value engineering it into a frankenfood.

I was inspired to reduce the temperature on the house thermostat, it was set to 70 and I put it down to 60, which was ok through the night however when I came into the kitchen this morning it was thoroughly uncomfortable; when I checked the actual ambient termperature it was 62 so I'd have had to wait a few more hours before it would have kicked the heating on again.

Nice experiment, no thanks, admittedly I only ran it back up to 68 but nonetheless, those 7 degrees made a difference.
